The laryngeal cancer is a cancer usually developed at the level of vocal cords, in a part called the glottis. Like other cancers of the ENT, laryngeal cancer is what we call a squamous cell carcinoma in vast majority of cases.
Tobacco and alcohol are the two major risk factors. There are nearly 5000 new cases of laryngeal cancer each year in France and laryngeal cancer represents 25% of cancers in the upper aero digestive tract.
The treatment performed for laryngeal cancers can be a laryngectomy, which is a larynx removal requiring the completion of a definitive tracheotomy. The main consequence of this operation is a loss of natural voice, which becomes laryngeal.
The lack of filtration, heating and humidifying inspired air due to the intervention, can cause pulmonary complications such as cough, dry or tracheal hyper secretion.
